- Oppose – Low quality. File size is 204KB, that's small. A larger less compressed file would have shown more fine details. It needs a restoration to remove spots and dust. Also there is a large out of focus patch on his shirt (on his left chest and his left upper arm), it's easy to see when zoomed in, say at 150% size. It looks abnormal (looks like a cut and pasted patch, or maybe the scanner messed up for some reason). Good composition and good EV though. I would support This image if it's restored from its original tiff Here. Bammesk (talk) 02:32, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

- Comment – I am leaning to oppose. It looks pretty but the EV is poor because the only thing that stands out is the sky. All else (mountain, resort, foreground) is in dim light and serves to highlight the sky. The wide angle view (lens) doesn’t help either because it emphasizes the foreground and the sky (minimizing the mountain and resort). In comparison This is a better photo, but not sharp enough to be FP. Bammesk (talk) 15:51, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose This photo has good EV as a depiction of how Wernher von Braun was seen at this time (a heroic type of technocrat) but very poor EV for how he is now seen (an amoral Nazi slave master who the US government cynically adopted). Nick-D (talk) 23:02, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense, but when you look at Guerrillero Heroico you can say the same since it is a photo used as a communist protest and they are almost synonymous with each other. That is a featured pic though. Wcamp9 (talk) 02:38, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not very familiar with Che and the histography around him, but that's an incredibly famous photo and has strong EV in its own right. I don't think that this photo would have EV in its own right. Nick-D (talk) 05:01, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- This is not a comment on Nick-D's argument, which I'm still thinking about, but just noting that Guerrillero Heroico has its own long and well-cited article, so the image is quite valuable as a cultural artifact and artwork (or work of notable propaganda if you prefer) regardless of its value as a portrait. It is definitely not "almost synonymous" with von Braun's official NASA portrait. Finally I might note, along the lines of what Nick-D is saying, that a restored version of this uncomfortable photo would be quite useful. blameless 03:39, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose in favor of This image which is in the article, is FP on Commons, and should be in the infobox IMO. The nom image doesn't convey a sense of scale, the car tire and the street lamps are too small to convey scale, and the buildings are cut up. Bammesk (talk) 03:03, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

- Amusing, well-composed visualization of the times secrecy is necessary for one's well-being. I think it has a lot of character for such an abstract idea. There are a few light scratches, but I think most of the background noise is authentic to the wooden boards (note, for instance, that the basin of the sink is smooth) and that white line in the upper right is a lamp pull-cord, not damage to the picture.

Since so few meme images have been properly licensed, I'm not sure we've had occasion to consider what might make them featurable, have we? blameless 23:52, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

- Couple comments... a legend would help with this work (what's the difference between the purple and red lines?) Also, why does the 0 MYA end up looking little like the current map? Is it excluding sedimentary infill, or...? Like, New Zealand ends up south of Australia rather than where it should be. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:55, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- The red lines are "convergent boundaries" where two plates slide towards each other. The arrows are pointed toward the plate that rises in height, as the other plate slides underneath it. The purple lines are "divergent boundaries" where two plates slide apart from each other. The black lines are "transform boundaries" where two plates move laterally with respect to each other (neither towards, nor apart). Together the red, purple and black lines show the tectonic plate boundaries. I can add legends for these in the article image captions (similar to the lead image Here). As far as New Zealand, I don't quite get the gist of your point. New Zealand is at the boundary of the Australian plate and the Pacific plate, see here. This animation doesn't really show a traditional map, say of land versus water. It shows crust and upper mantle, I think. The animation shows regions of "dark tan" and regions of "blue-ish gray". I will look into it and find out what they are exactly, and reply later. Bammesk (talk) 02:57, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Alright. This information should be on the description page, per WP:FP?#7. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 13:16, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Done. I labeled it on the file page and image captions. . . . . . The "tan" and "blue" are Continental crust (land plus its peripheral shallow seabed). The "white" is Oceanic crust (not shallow but deeper ocean floor) [2]. Just by watching the animation, it's obvious that the "tan" is older continental crust (over a billion years for the most part), and the "blue" is younger continental crust (under a billion years for the most part). Bammesk (talk) 02:23, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment - I find it very interesting, but quite confusing, at least on the first viewing. I'd support a version without the flickering boundary lines, and in just one color for the continents. It is of course impossible to exactly represent the earth hundreds of millions years ago, but a more "viewer friendly" version would be nice. --Janke | Talk 09:27, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

- It doesn't imply that at all. See the updated image caption. 71% of continental crust is landmass [3]. The animation shows lots of change and increase in landmass. Bammesk (talk) 02:32, 10 December 2024 (UTC) Bammesk (talk) 01:42, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

- Support Original, the original is now restored as well (by Yann). It has the original tone. It is well preserved, so I see no reason to remove the tone and convert to grayscale. Oppose Alt 1, photo is well preserved, therefore removing the tone is original research FP criterion #6. Bammesk (talk) 17:46, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- Saying that a grayscale version is original research is quite farfetched IMO, since this is originality a black and white picture, and that the tone was added later. Yann (talk) 12:22, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- "WP:Original research" means there is no source to support this was originally published in grayscale. Plus no indication the color tone is an unintended defect. Even in modern times some B&W photos are published with a color tone [4][5]. Bammesk (talk) 16:04, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- And where is the evidence that the tone is original? The picture comes from Internet Archive, not a primary source. Sorry, but this looks like a strawman argument to me. Yann (talk) 09:44, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- I have no reason to doubt Internet Archive [6], because a color tone on an older photo isn't unusual, example [7]. You wrote: "the tone was added later", and I challenged this assertion. That's not a straw man argument. Bammesk (talk) 04:25, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- I would agree if the picture comes from a GLAM, or we can see the original print, but that's not the case here. Yann (talk) 18:27, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- No problem. I go with the "Original" and oppose "Alt 1" because it's unsourced and I don't see a convincing rationale for it. The Internet Archive copy comes from the collection of a private photographer/archivist. That's as good as doctormacro.com and ebay where we get some of our FPs from [8][9][10]. Has anyone reviewed to ensure that MatPat had the right to release this under a free license? — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:39, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment It is my understanding that the applicable Commons policy here would be de minimis. The focus of the video is not on these elements, and cropping such elements from the video or using them on their own would be problematic. However, the removal/censorship of such content would significantly impact its quality. See commons:COM:DM; I think the applicable criteria here is
Copyrighted work X is identifiable and an unavoidable part of the subject, and is essential to the subject (e.g. removing it would make the file useless) but the work is shown in insufficient detail and/or with insufficient clarity, so de minimis may apply.
Now, the use of these elements is not in low detail or clarity, but each copyrighted image shows up for a few seconds at most in a fifteen-minute video, so I think that qualifies as minimal usage. Di (they-them) (talk) 02:47, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- I can see the argument, but the sheer volume of various items adds up. It's the same reason I nominated one of my own video uploads for deletion after the fact... too much fair use, despite a valid license from the creator. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:02, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- In addition to Chris's concern, I am wondering whether it is possible to change the video thumbnail (I don't really know how that works). I am not sure this one meets the spirit of Wikipedia:Logos. The logo may be used for acceptable commentary within the video, but it is not being used that way in the articles in which the thumbnail appears. I am honestly also a little skeptical of the de minimis claim here. Regarding featuring, I think I land on oppose, as criterion 4, if it is met, is met only barely and arguably. blameless 19:28, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
