Mapùa Institute of Technology (MIT, MapuaTech or simply Mapua) is a private, non-sectarian, Filipino collegiate institute located at Intramuros, Manila. It was founded by Don Tomas Mapùa on 1925. The institute is a highly reputable source of engineers and topnotchers in the engineering board exams. Mapua is also known as the sole provider of the Quarterm semestral calendar in the Philippines.

Notable Events

  • In 1925, Don Tomas Mapùa established the Institute using a rundown building in Carriedo Street. At first, the Institute only provided technical lessons for students that work by day and study at night. Only 30 students and a dozen of faculty members were part of the Institute.
  • In 1926, the number of students and faculty increased and continually grew as years went by.
  • During World War II, the Institute was used as garrison by the Japanese forces during their occupation of Manila at the time and all classes were suspended. The Institute would continue to suffer throughout the war as the effort of the Institute to continue the studies of the students were suspended and Senior students were forced to prematurely graduate. In 1944 the Institute suffered total destruction at the hands of the war. As a part of the rehabilitation program, the former De Luxe Fashion School was acquired and housed the high school department in 1948.
  • In 1951, the Mapùa family acquired a piece of land from the La Corporacion Fransicana where the present Intramuros Campus stands. All the structural constructions were finished in 1963.
  • The Mapùa Institute of Technology became the third biggest technological institution in the world in 1962.
  • In 1999, the Mapùa family sold the institute to the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC). The YGC has decided to rename the institute to Malayan University, a move unpopular with students and alumni. The name "Mapùa Institute of Technology" is still under use up to now.
  • In 2002, due to space constraints on the Intramuros Campus, the old RCBC Building in Sen. Gil Puyat Ave. in Makati City was bought and converted into the Mapùa Makati Campus, where the School of Information Technology was moved. A spin-off of the School of IT, the Mapùa IT Center, on which the Makati Campus bears its name, was established. The MITc offers 2-year Diploma Programs that eventually lead into an Associate Degree ladderized to the Bachelor’s Degree (4-year) IT courses of MIT.
  • In July 2004, Mapùa started to provide Nursing programs at the Makati Campus.
  • In 2005, the Mapùa High School was disbanded and the former campus demolished to pave way for the Malayan Science High School, a YGC project. The Intramuros Campus started to provide Psychology programs while the Makati Campus started its Hotel and Restaurant Management, Business Administration and Accountancy programs.

Accreditation

The Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) has recently granted the Level II Second Reaccreditation status to eight (8) engineering programs of the Institute namely; Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental and Sanitary Engineering.

Innovations

  • Mapùa was the first institute in the Philippines to feature a magnetic ID card system which they call "CARDINAL Plus" which stands for CARD and Integrated Network Access Log-in Plus. It is a two piece plastic PVC card with a microchip and antenna inserted in between. The CARDINAL Plus functions not only as an identification card but acts as a Library card as well. The CARDINAL Plus also has the capability to store student logs, grades, guidance records, schedules and more. The De La Salle University and other schools adopted the magnetic ID system later on.
  • The Institute also offers an online student information, enrollment and load reservation service through its [1] service.
