Finn Hudson is a fictional character from the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee. The character is portrayed by actor Cory Monteith, and has appeared in Glee from its pilot episode, first broadcast on May 19, 2009. Finn was developed by Glee creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. He is star quarterback of the school's football team who risks alienation by his friends to join the glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, where the show is set.[1]

Storyline

Finn is the quarterback of the William McKinley High School football team. When glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) overhears Finn singing in the shower, he blackmails him into joining the glee club by planting marijuana in his locker. Finn is mocked by the other football players, but realizes he enjoys being in the club.[2] Finn is dating head cheerleader Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), but develops feelings for glee club star Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), kissing her during a private rehearsal but tells her to forget it happened and goes back to Quinn. Finn suffers from early ejaculation which causes him to believe he is the father of Quinn's unborn child even though they never actually had sex.[3] Throughout the first half of the season, Finn restles with staying with Quinn for the sake of his unborn child and his growing feelings for Rachel. In "Ballad", Finn tells Quinn's parents about her pregnancy, and has Quinn move in with him and his mother when her own parents throw her out.[4] Rachel discovers that Puck (Mark Salling) is actually the father of Quinn's baby and decides to tell Finn, who responds by punching Puck and refusing to talk to Quinn.[5]. Rachel begins dating Finn, who decides he needs to take time out for himself and breaks up with her. He changes his mind soon after, but Rachel has already begun dating Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff), the lead singer of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. The glee club members suspect that Jesse is using Rachel, and threaten to expel her from the group unless she breaks up with him. Rachel pretends that they have separated, but continues her relationship with Jesse. Finn, believing her to be available, tells her that he has decided to date her. When she declines, he states that he "isn't just some guy you met in a CD store who you can blow off" and that he is not willing to give up on the chance of them being together. Jesse pressures Rachel to have sex with him, but she decides she is not ready, ultimately over her feelings for Finn. Finn decides to sleep with Cheerleader Santana Lopez, but afterwords, believing that the sex was meaningless, tells Rachel he couldn't go through with it. Jesse then transfers to McKinley High so that he and Rachel can be together openly. Although Rachel is in a relationship with Jesse, it is clear that she still has stronger romantic feelings for Finn, creating a love triangle between the three. Jealous of the clearly unplatonic relationship, Jesse confronts him and Finn agrees to back off. Rachel attempts to increase her popularity by creating a music video in which Jesse, Finn and Puck all play her boyfriends, each unaware the role has been triple-cast. When the three learn they were triple-cast, they are all disgusted that Rachel decieved them to increase her popularity by making it seem three men were fighting over her. Jesse breaks up with Rachel as a result.

In the episode "Laryngitis", Rachel loses her voice. Believing herself to be nothing but her voice, she becomes depressed. Finn then introduces her to his friend Sean, who became paralyzed after being hit in a football game. Although promising earlier to Jesse that he would leave Rachel alone, he asks her: "When are you going to realize that he'll never be into you like I am?". For his glee assignment Finn sings "Jessie's Girl" to Rachel and the rest of the glee club, hoping to win her back, though it is seen that he fails.

When his mother (Romy Rosemont) begins dating Kurt's (Chris Colfer) father Burt (Mike O'Malley), Finn worries that she is forgetting about his late father. He tries to break them up, but relents when Burt tells him that he loves his mother. [6] As the relationship progresses, Finn and his mom eventually move in with Kurt and Burt, at which time the two boys confront the fact that while they have very different personalities and that Finn is aware of Kurt's crush on him, they both need to be willing to accept the truths that they are struggling with (Finn with the idea that his mom is dating, Kurt with the fact that Finn is straight).

In the season finale entitled "Journey", the glee club lose all hope of winning Regionals because Sue has become a judge for the event. Rachel breaks down, fearing that the club will be canceled with Sue Sylvester judging Regionals. When Finn tells her to toughen up and be more optimistic because she is glee's leader and the club needs her, she unexpectedly kisses him. Right before performing, Rachel wishes luck for Finn and he confesses his love for her. Even though the team loses, they admit that glee can never be truly over because Mr. Schue keeps it alive. At the close of the episode, Mr. Schue reveals that glee club will be back next year and it is implied that Finn and Rachel are begining a relationship.

Casting

Auditioning actors with no theatrical experience were required to prove they could sing and dance as well as act. Monteith submitted a tape of himself acting only, and was requested to submit a second, musical tape, in which he sang "a cheesy, '80s music-video-style version" of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling"."[7] Monteith was attracted to the fact that Finn "isn't just a dumb jock", but instead "walks a fine line between following his dreams and balancing what other people expect of him."[8]

Reception

The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan has opined that: "Cory Monteith gives quarterback Finn Hudson a jock-ish authority mixed with an appealingly square naivete."[9] Korbi Ghosh of Zap2it enjoys Finn's "sweet nature", observing that: "it's clear that at Finn's core, he's a good person."[10] Ghosh has, however, criticised the scene in "Ballad" in which Finn serenades the sonogram of Quinn's unborn child, calling it "totally weird" and questioning "I mean, dude, are you really as dumb as you look?".[10] Ghosh would like Finn to "lose a little bit of that naivete", and to "wake up and get wise to the fact that his best friend had sex with his lady and the baby is theirs."[10]
