:::::Ok well, I took a second look at Elquamentrary's edit history and when you compare it to everyone else who starts on Wikipedia, it looks pretty much identical to a lot of newbies. New editors should be given a chance and good faith should be assumed. Hell, you could've asked for a Checkuser but you just banned him anyway. I think it was to cover your tracks and promote your little agenda in your content dispute, but we'll see what ArbCom thinks. Note to admins reviewing any of my admin actions (expand to read).

I am often busy in that "real life" of which you may have read.

Blocks are the most serious things we can do: they prevent users from interacting with Wikipedia. Block reviews are urgent. Unless I say otherwise in the block message on the user's talk page, I am happy for any uninvolved admin to unblock a user I have blocked, provided that there is good evidence that the problem that caused the block will not be repeated. All I ask is that you leave a courtesy note here and/or on WP:ANI, and that you are open to re-blocking if I believe the problem is not resolved - in other words, you can undo the block, but if I strongly feel that the issue is still live, you re-block and we take it to the admin boards. The same applies in spades to blocks with talk page access revoked. You are free to restore talk page access of a user for whom I have revoked it, unless it's been imposed or restored following debate on the admin boards.

User:DGG also has my permission to undelete or unprotect any article I have deleted and/or salted, with the same request to leave a courtesy note, and I'll rarely complain if any uninvolved admin does this either, but there's usually much less urgency about an undeletion so I would prefer to discuss it first - or ask DGG, two heads are always better than one. I may well add others in time, DGG is just one person with whom I frequently interact whose judgment I trust implicitly.

Any WP:BLP issue which requires you to undo an admin action of mine, go right ahead, but please post it immediately on WP:AN or WP:ANI for review.

About me

JzG reacting to yet another drama

I am in my early fifties, British, have been married for over quarter of a century to the world's most tolerant woman, and have two adult children. I am an amateur baritone and professional nerd. I do not tolerate racism, or any kind of bigotry. I sometimes, to my chagrin, mention that I have been an admin for a long time: some people think this is me invoking admin status in order to subdue dissent, actually it's just me as a middle aged parent of young adults saying "oh no, not this shit again". I am British, I have the British sense of humour (correctly spelled) and I absolutely do not have an accent, since I went to a thousand-year-old school. Everything I do or say could be wrong. Predatory open-access journals

Hi, I saw my first example of a removal of a predatory open-access journal with your edit. I'd like to know more about this in terms of Wikipedia policy: do we indiscriminately remove any source from these journals?   • I would go one step further, first blacklist the whole lot (including their doi-patterns, whatever). If s.o. make me a list in a request on the spam blacklist, with a bit of a story / reference and maybe even some evidence of spamming of some of them, I'll be happy to pull the trigger. We do regularly have (pseudo-)scientists COI spamming their stuff, I imagine that with people who use these journals that will be even more likely. --Dirk Beetstra T C 03:13, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've not actually seen that many cases; I think I remember one dude who had plugged his own work in a dozen articles or more.       • It is generally really low-volume but recurring often because it is difficult to extend referencing your own work to much outside of your own subject area (and it is even difficult to spam your own subject area completely with the work you have done). Hulu/examiner type spam is also often of that type, and it is also somewhat similar as the petition-spam. Editors generally only hit 1 or 2 pages, but when you start looking, it often involves many editors (>1% of blacklist hits are on change.org/'petition'). Porn sites also follow a similar pattern - there is generally no spam from the more prominent porn sites (!), but A LOT of abuse. --Dirk Beetstra T C 05:34, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You know, that's an interesting metric you bring up there Drmies. In the years I've been doing university work, I can't say a single journal advertisement that has made it to my spam email folder even met a semblance of being reputable that I'd consider it for even low-tier publications. Most have lately been pretty blatant open access pay-to-play journals at that too. That's a good rule of thumb (assuming one's spam filters for whatever academic email they use is decent). Kingofaces43, I wasn't really trying to be metrical--I'm in English so I do anecdotal, haha. We have a new tech guy here now, and I've been keeping him posted about the academic spam I receive; I think our filters now are doing a better job. In my spam box I found something for "International Journal of Language and Linguistics", a scam run by Science Publishing Group (in the US, the "processing charge" is $370). I also get a lot of spam from outfits like ERPA International Congresses on Education. They do offer a package deal, including a river cruise with gala dinner. And if you look at the keynote speakers, you'll note they snag some US academics as well for these joints. Drmies (talk) 16:45, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think this is an excellent idea. Yes, there will be an occasional (very rare) case where an article in one of these journals is, in fact, reliable. I have once (once!) seen an article published in a SCIRP journal by a very reputed scientist. Knowing that person, he most certainly was not aware that he was publishing in a predatory journal. But as I said, that was just once. There will be others, I guess, but extremely rare. In 99.9% of the cases, we'll have sub-quality articles that did not undergo rigid peer review. So, yes, I support blacklisting the whole lot. Guy has some interesting links at the top of this page. I was surprised to see how many references we have to articles published by the archetypical rogue publisher, OMICS. And I have occasionally seen editors trying to promote a seedy journal by inserting references to their rag in different WP articles and then argue at AfD "it's cited in multiple WP articles" (not that that reasoning helped them much, of course). --Randykitty (talk) 07:43, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Beall's list contains several hundred publishers, and most of them have no links at all on Wikipedia. It's a large addition to the blacklist but I can easily prepare it from the data I have.     • My thought is that these links simply have no place here. XLinkBot is a nice step-up for now, but if you published something there, and you paid to be published, then I don't think you will be deterred by a bot that reverted your addition .. they will re-add ('of course it is reliable, I wrote it myself, now I want the recognition for it!' - spammer mentality). I would just start preparing the blacklist request, preferably with evidence of abuse and why these should never be used as references, we can then see how much disruption immediate blacklisting would give and start cleaning, and then pull the trigger .. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:31, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I understand the rationale of removing articles from bad journals, and I'm super on-board with that. What I am not on-board with is removing sources but leaving the claims they cited intact; in the above article (and I'm guessing similar is true in the other articles you've removed sources from) you've left "Upon these substrates, it feeds as a saprotroph, breaking down the dead organic matter in order to sustain itself" and "The species has been recorded in ... northern Africa" uncited; as they're not particularly controversial, removing them wouldn't be ideal, but perhaps you could have replaced the reference with a {{fact}} tag? I remove the claim if it looks dodgy, and leave it if it seems uncontentious or appears to have another source. It is literally impossible to clean up bad sources without someone arguing that (a) I shjould always leave the claim and tag it {{fact}} or (b) always remove the claim or (c) never remove the source until I find another one. One in a hundred ends up with a post like yours. It's not that I don't get it, it's just that it's impossible to do this thing in less than geological timescales without the occasional arbitrary call. Protection on Linsner deletion request

I have lowered the protection level to autoconfirmed, and even think that that is too high. At worst the situation is meatpuppetry, and the situation is not so bad (just 3-4 editors) that that warrants protection. See Wikipedia:Protection_policy#Extended_confirmed_protection as well, extended confirmed protection is only to be used if lower protection has shown to be ineffective. The whole damn thing stinks.
  1. I tag a lede that's under dispute, not just by me but by other editors on the talk page (like Elquamentry)
  2. Guy gets me topic banned for tagging it, all under the pretense of "nobody supports your tag"
  3. ....which is clearly a farce since Elquamentary supported my tag
  4. So to cover his tracks and make the whole damn thing look justified, he bans Elquamentary, even though he did nothing wrong.
  5. Guy gets called out for his behavior and doesn't even see the slightest bit wrong with anything he did. Big honking red flag right there
  6. An entire day later he reverses it, and another admin (Bishonen..who isn't involved on Acupuncture, BUT IS INVOLVED WITH ME) quickly covers up for Guy's mistake. Move along, nothing to see here.
I wasn't pissed about the TBan. I wan't even pissed at Guy for initiating it. If Wikipedians want to have horseshit articles that are an embarrassment to the project, and ban one of the only academics in the field of Chinese sinology and history that's ever given a shit about editing on Wikipedia for fre, who also pretty much only uses the talk pages anyway to make his points and bring everyone back to a discussion on how Wikipedia is supposed to work, then fine, no sweat. Not only do I not despise Guy and his ilk, I really feel sorry for these power tripping crusaders who devote their life to lying to audiences, declaring themselves to be the ultimate authority regarding what the "scientific community" says about a particular topic, while suppressing what the real scientific community (NIH, WHO, NHS, Cochrane and others) also say about that very topic. Les, we'll never be friends. That actually bothers me because I like everybody (ask my project managers). However, there's a fundamental fact about me that I'd encourage you to check out and verify for yourself. I was a Wikipedian, and a Wikipedia admin. before I was a skeptic. Before I even knew what a skeptic was. I was working to defend BLPs before WP:BLP existed. My views, my conclusions and my agenda come from Wikipedia, not the other way around. I suspect that if you asked Jimbo directly, he'd tell you this is true. I am old school, an anachronism. I date back to the days of "fuck process". Meh. Editors subject to topic bans rarely agree with the ban, and very rarely see their edits as anything other than a service to the project. Which is why they are topic banned in the first place. But Guy, you have actively suppressed Cochrane updates being added to the article, as well as "positive" statements from the NHS and NIH being added. It doesn't matter what you believe, although I have never asked because you've already let everyone know anytime you get a chance.
