Sabrina Dhowre Elba is a Canadian model, media personality, entrepreneur and activist. She is a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development.
Early life
Sabrina Dhowre Elba was born on June 16th, 1988 in Montreal, Canada and is of Somali descent. Her mother Maryam Egal emigrated to Canada from Somalia, where she raised Sabrina and her 4 siblings. [2] After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Simon Fraser University, earning her bachelor's degree in Philosophy, with intentions of going to law school.[3]
Career
Sabrina became a model with IMG Models, and was featured in various magazines, such as British Vogue and Elle.[4][5] She also was crowned "Ms. Vancouver" at a beauty pageant in 2014.[4] Her agency is IMG Models in London.[6][1]
Sabrina co-hosted the 2021 GQ Men of the Year awards and has been a guest presenter for ITV's Good Morning Britain.
She has had an acting role in projects such as the CNBC TV series On Assignment (2005) and the movie Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022). Sabrina and Idris Elba will also soon be executive producers on their first Afrofuturist adult animated sci-fi series tentatively titled Dantai, for Crunchyroll.[7]
In 2022, Sabrina and Idris Elba created a lifestyle and wellness brand known as S'ABLE Labs. [8] S’ABLE Labs (Elba’s backwards), is a multifaceted well-being initiative driven by purposeful partnership and conscious communities. Its vegan, genderless skincare products feature responsibly sourced ingredients in collaboration with smallholder farmers from around the globe.
Philanthropy
Sabrina has always been a passionate advocate for human rights and food security, and she credits her mother for inspiring her to use her voice to help others.[9]
In April 2020, she was appointed as a United Nations goodwill ambassador for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).[10][11]
Sabrina worked with her husband Idris Elba, also a goodwill ambassador, with IFAD to help launch a new $40 million fund intended on lessening impact of COVID-19 on "farmers and food producers in rural areas".[12] Both later worked with the IFAD on projects in Kenya, Zambia, and Egypt, aimed at helping farmers, and combating hunger and climate change.[13][14]
At the 2022 COP27 in Egypt, she was interviewed about the impact of climate change and the importance of empowering and investing in rural areas, to which she stated that there need to be long-term solutions, and said that impact of climate change in rural areas is "devastating".
Sabrina is also involved with various civil society organisations, including a partnership with Farm Africa, as a board member for Conservation International, co-chairing the European board for Global Citizen on environmental issues[15], as an ambassador for Mothers2mothers and a patron for S.T.O.R.M. Domestic Violence Charity.[16]
Awards and Honours
In January 2023, she and her husband Idris Elba received the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where they were speakers. The award recognises artists that are also role models for global leaders and who are making a tangible impact on the world.[17] Their speech focused on food insecurity in Sudan, Haiti, and Somalia, and struggles faced by small farmers around the world.
In February 2023, Sabrina and Idris Elba were recipients of the Time100 Impact Award in Dubai. This award recognizes global leaders who have gone above and beyond to move their industries, and the world, forward.[18]
Sabrina Elba recently received an Honorable Mention alongside Idris Elba at the United Nation SDG Action Campaign Awards.[19]

She met Idris Elba at a jazz bar in 2016 while he was in Canada filming the Mountain Between Us, and they married in Morocco on April 26, 2019.[20][21][22] They married in Marrakech and honeymooned in Tanzania.[23]
