Syrtis Major meant in Acts 10, according to commentators

[edit]

I was tempted to add the template, Syrtis[which?]. I was wondering whether it's even knowable (in which case we have the awkward problem of where to put encyclopedic information about undifferentiated Syrtes). But I made a cursory attempt to answer the question myself, and the two commentators I checked [1] and [2] agree that the reference is to Syrtis Major. The former offers the interesting explanation: "The word was sometimes used in that general sense; but with the article it must be restricted (at least here) to the place properly so called, the Syrtis Major on the coast of Africa, a gulf dangerous from its shoals, lying south-west of Crete." This seems to be more than just a consideration of the plausible path that continued past Gavdos. Wareh (talk) 14:39, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
