Overview
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology or KAIST (/kaɪst/) is the elite leading [1] research university located in Daedeok Science Town, Daejeon, South Korea. According to the world's top 200 universities ranking list by the UK's 2006 Times Higher Education Supplement, KAIST is ranked 3rd in Korea and 198th in the world.[2] KAIST is located in Daedock Research Park in the academia cluster.
Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) by the KAIST Law (Law No. 3778; new foundation of the university for the establishment of the bachelor's program), it currently has 7,000 students and 800 teaching staff.
KAIST is regarded as one of the best science and engineering schools in Asia[3], and it is the only university in Korea that is controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology instead of the Ministry of Education. The Institutes's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions. Its graduates have played a major role in making the nation into a net exporter of high-technology goods over the past few decades. Each year, KAIST admits a large fraction of gifted students from South Korean science high schools and other top-notch high schools.[4] According to an evaluation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, "KAIST, the best university in Korea, is considered to be comparable to that of the top 10% of U.S universities." (KAIST Facts, 2002). In 2000, Asiaweek ranked KAIST as the overall best among engineering and IT universities in Asia.[5] Its next goal is to build a global reputation as one of the finest science and technology institutes in the world. KAIST plans to transform itself into a top-class university by launching R&D programs that cover information technology and biotechnology. It already has a sound R&D program. The official slogan of KAIST is Education for the World, Research for the Future. Liquid crystals are represented in KAIST's symbol.[6]
Graduates of KAIST are highly-appreciated, nationally as well as internationally, by a wide range of professional communities, and are highly successful in their professional lives, thanks to their excellent education and qualities of innovation and creativity, fostered in the international environment that KAIST provides.[7]
From the year 2007,the school has changed dramatically in both curriculum and student body system. English has been flowed into every place in the school, from the class lectures to books, from the Korean-way to English-way. Every book in KAIST and its curriculum are appreciated as the US top universities' ones, the teachers are all from the US higher education, and the studen ts are from the most prestigious science high schools in all regions from korea. In the mean while, strong flows of foreign students are coming to KAIST. The first batch includes students from Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and also from Latin America to Africa. It has made the school more diverse not only in culture but also in studies.
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia. It is also a member of Association of East Asian Research Universities which is a prestigious group of Asian research universities. It also has many linkage program with the reputated universities throughout the world.
