Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations
- This page is for requests to usurp accounts that already exist. If you want your account renamed to a name that is not already taken, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name.
If you wish to request usurpation, please read and follow the instructions below. The account you want to usurp should have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation, although rare exceptions are made where old edits do not require attribution under the GFDL. Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.
If you have already unified your login, it is impossible to rename an existing account to that name, because of bug #13507. Unification is still possible once the old account is moved out of the way, but to merge edits from another username with your global account you will need to request that a steward deletes your global account first.

Notes
- When the rename has been completed, your account will have been renamed, and any contributions you have made (including deleted contributions) will be reattributed to your new account as a background process. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
- Note: The process responsible for reallocating old contributions is currently dependent upon the job queue mechanism. As such, you may find old contributions do not immediately appear under your new account; this is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although the length of time will vary according to the size of the job queue on this wiki, and the status of the server processes which process this queue.
- The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
- This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
- Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.
A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

Though this may be a bit late, I'd like to clear up why I wanted this username. Mumbles was already taken, so I did what I always do as my second choice - Mumblebot. At the time, I had no idea what a "bot" was, so I took no notice an joined. Someone put a notice on my user talk page, and I requested a name change to Mumbles, it was taken, and so I ended up here. One editor recently raised concern about my username. I choose the one I have now because Apis was taken. That user has only made one edit two years ago now, and I would be grateful if I could change my username to Apis instead so as to not offend anyone unintentionally.
— Apis (talk) 02:44, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Note:
- The target username has made edits to Wikipedia. Due to licensing concerns, this may be a barrier to usurpation.
- Requesting user is established. Perhaps another username choice? Rudget (Help?) 15:26, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll try to come up with a new one then if this one is unattainable. Does usernames ever 'time out' and become available after a certain period of inactivity?
— Apis (talk) 18:58, 11 May 2008 (UTC)- Hmm. I don't think so.. Rudget (Help?) 14:57, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I'm not completely sure if this is possible, because Fano has done one edit [1]. However, it was deleted with this edit: [2], and a search for the name Cole Gerst resulted in nothing that could have a source in the edit from Fano, so my guess is no GFDL? I don't have many edits myself, but I'm also the owner of de:Benutzer:Fano, commons:User:Fano and meta:User:Fano, together we have some more edits. But I'm not an Admin or something else. - Hi, I'm sv:user:Xenus at the swedish wikipedia, where I am an administrator, I want to change my username to Xenus to use my global account. The current account named Xenus is indefinitely blocked (troll account). Skolan124 (talk) 15:24, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

- Clerk note: Requesting user is a legalised sockpuppet permitted by policy. Secondary account of Iunaw (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). Rudget (Help?) 19:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- The bureaucrats may want to look at this request further. The owner of the account is a 2 month old editor with ~300 edits. The sock account is only used to "store templates" (currently all deleted and rejected voting templates, such as Keep:). I personally do not believe it is appropriate for this sock account which has very little benefit or use to usurp this username. Just my opinion, however. seresin ( ¡? ) 04:22, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- I believe this account -or more exactly it's shared userspace- benefits the whole WP community and i can't think of a better use for such a special account name. There are a lot of unofficial templates, userboxes and scripts on userpages intended for community in-house use. The ability to use easy-to-remember userspace addresses could promote the use of such material to the benefit of the community (unless you consider unofficial=bad and not a part of the whole process). There is also a precedent of usurpation for the very same purpose. The potential uses of this account are to be considered, and the way they benefit WP. If someone has questions, concerns or does not agree with this reasoning, please start a discussion on the talk page (unless you think it is more apropiate to discuss here) Iunaw 16:07, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

"Ohyeahmormons" is an immature username and could be considered an offensive name; I was once temporarily blocked from Wiktionary just because my username was considered offensive (Though unfortunately I do not have an e-mail or such to prove this). Irk is a personal nickname, and although it is a bit of a stretch from my previous one, User:Irk has no talk page and has not made one edit to Wikipedia, thus meeting the criteria for such a name change.}} Irk Come in for a drink! 04:02, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Dreamfall was my account for some months ago, forgot both my password and my email password, thus continued with this one and hope my account name changes soon. I own an account with the name dreamfall in persian wikipedia with about 1700 contributions. The only thing I remember from dreamfall is that the email I entered was dreamfall123@yahoo.com.
