Ludum Dare is an online community which hosts 48 hour independent game development competitions. The competitions take place three times annually, and there are also "mini" competitions that take place every month (except the months of the main competition).

Competition Format

[edit]

The main Ludum Dare competition (compo) begins with the announcement of a theme, which is voted on by the community. Community members often blog their progress through the site. Games are submitted within 48 hours of the theme announcement.

Rules

[edit]

The main rules for Ludum Dare are that game authors must work alone and create all content (including code, graphics, and sound) within the 48 hour period.

Judging

[edit]

Games are judged by all individuals who submit a game for that compo. Rankings are given in several categories (including: Overall, Innovation, Graphics, Humor) on a 1-5 scale, plus N/A for categories where a score is not applicable (such as the Sound category for a game which has no sound). Judging takes place for 2-3 weeks following the competition.

Trophies

[edit]

Any member of the community can award a trophy to any other member. Trophies are given a name and an image. Trophies are often given for community involvement, peculiar moments in a submitted game, or anything else.
