Asuran (transl. Demon) is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaippuli S. Thanu under his production banner V Creations .[3] The film stars Dhanush and Manju Warrier in lead roles, where the latter makes her Tamil debut in this film.

G. V. Prakash Kumar has scored the music for the film, rejoining back his association with director Vetrimaaran.[4] The film is based on the novel Vekkai by Poomani.[5]

Asuran was released on 4 October 2019, and received extremely positive reviews.[1]

Plot

Siva Saami (Dhanush), his wife Pachaiyamma (Manju Warrier), sons Murugan (Teejay Arunasalam), Chidambaran (Ken Karunas), and their little daughter live in a secluded place far from the main village tending crops on their small parcel of land. Narasimhan (Aadukalam Naren), a baron in the main village, desires to have Siva Saami's land and moves aggressively to take it over. While Siva Saami's stays away from confrontation, his sons assert their hold over the land they till. Having a typical past and not wanting a déjà vu, Siva Saami tries to maintain his wisdom. What human emotions, nature, and societal structures do to Siva Saami's wisdom is the rest of the story.

Janani K from India Today, rated the film 3.5 out of 5, and stated that "Director Vetri Maaran’s Asuran is a thrilling revenge drama of an oppressed family in a village. With solid writing backed by brilliant performances, Asuran is a classic film."[22]
