Mario & Luigi: Brothership[a] is a role-playing video game developed by Acquire and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the sixth main installment in the Mario & Luigi series. It is the first original entry in the series since Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (2015), the first that is not developed by AlphaDream after its closure due to bankruptcy in October 2019, the first that features fully 3D gameplay, and the first for a home console.[b] The game was announced in a Nintendo Direct on June 18, 2024, and released on November 7, 2024.

Gameplay

[edit]

Following a similar gameplay style to that of the previous games, Brothership features advanced jump and hammer attacks utilizing both brothers at the same time as well as brand new and returning Bros. Attacks.[3] Brothership's combat system is also very similar to that of the other titles in the series. Battles are initiated in the overworld and revolve around Mario and Luigi inflicting damage on enemies as well as dodging attacks. The amount of damage the brothers deal depends on how well the action command is performed, and some enemies are immune to certain attacks. Mario and Luigi can also use special attacks known as Bros. Attacks and use battle plugs to customize battles.[4]

As in all previous Mario & Luigi titles, Mario and Luigi are controlled simultaneously in the overworld.[5] Much of the game revolves around Mario and Luigi using a cannon to travel to islands, which they must connect back together by placing giant plugs into outlets.[6] The hub, Shipshape Island, is a ship that is used to reach the other islands.[7] Much like previous Mario & Luigi games, Brothership features sidequests that can be completed alongside the main story.[8] Brothership introduces a mechanic known as "Luigi Logic", which can be used to find collectibles, solve puzzles, and devise strategies for defeating bosses.[9][10][11]

Setting

[edit]

The game takes place on the sea of the world of Concordia and its islands, which Mario and Luigi traverse on Shipshape Island, a structure that is described as "part ship, part island".[12] The brothers are transported from the Mushroom Kingdom to Concordia via a giant portal.[9]

Development

[edit]

After series creator AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019, Nintendo filed a new trademark for Mario & Luigi in January 2020.[13] In June 2024, following the reveal of the game in a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo noted that "some of the original developers" from the franchise, referring to AlphaDream, are involved in the development of Brothership, but did not reveal what studio was producing the game.[14] The primary developer was later revealed to be Acquire from the game's intellectual property notices; they had previously worked on Octopath Traveler, which Nintendo initially published outside of Japan.[15][16] The game released on the Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024.[17][18]

Reception

[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Brothership has received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[19] PJ O'Reilly of Nintendo Life and Ozzie Mejia of Shacknews praised the game's combat system, story, and art style.[24][26] Writing for the Daily Mirror, Aaron Potter lauded the aesthetics, stating that the game "looks absolutely gorgeous" and was "the best the RPG series has ever looked".[27] PCMag's Will Greenwald gave the game an Editor's Choice award, describing it as "colorful, charming, mechanically engaging".[25] Giovanni Colantonio of Digital Trends and Logan Plant of IGN gave more mixed reviews, criticizing the pacing.[23][28] Reviewers generally criticized the game's performance issues.[29]
