Production
[edit]In May 2024, it was rumoured that actor-director RJ Balaji was planning for a sequel to his directorial debut film Mookuthi Amman (2020), with Trisha Krishnan replacing Nayanthara in the lead role.[4] Balaji was reported to have also approached Shruti Haasan for the lead role in the sequel, as Balaji was initially interested to cast her in the lead role for Mookuthi Amman before Nayanthara.[5] To silence such speculations that either Trisha or Haasan would be replacing Nayanthara, Vels Film International, on 12 July 2024, confirmed Nayanthara to reprise her titular role in the sequel.[6] Latter it was reported that Balaji would be replaced by Sundar C, who was then working on an untitled-project with Vadivelu.[7] On 16 September 2024, it was officially announced that Sundar would direct the sequel, titled Mookuthi Amman 2 which would be jointly produced by Vels Film International, Rowdy Pictures and Avni Cinemax.[8][9] Balaji said he chose not to direct the sequel due to creative differences with the producers, and he only suggested Sundar as director.[10]
Produced on a large budget of ₹100 crore (US$11 million), the muhurat puja of the film took place on 6 March 2025, in Chennai.[11][12]
Controversy
[edit]The production of Mookuthi Amman 2 faced an on-set controversy due to a disagreement between lead actress Nayanthara and an assistant director over a costume-related issue. It was reported that Nayanthara scolded the assistant director, prompting director Sundar C. to intervene and temporarily halt the shoot. Producer Ishari K. Ganesh stepped in to mediate the situation and held discussions with Nayanthara to resolve the conflict. With the issue settled, the team decided to cancel the schedule in Pollachi and resumed filming at the Ponniamman Temple in Alapakkam, Chennai.[13] [14]
