The University of Mostar (Latin: Universitas studiorum Mostariensis) is the second largest university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in Mostar, founded in 1977. It is the only Croatian-language university outside the Republic of Croatia.
The university has ten faculties and one Academy of Arts[1] with 50 different studies, 46 specializations and 70 study groups. This makes the University of Mostar one of the most diverse educational institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[2] The University of Mostar is the fastest growing university in Bosnia and Herzegovina with 10,712 students, 17% of whom come from the Republic of Croatia.[3]
Originally called the Džemal Bijedić University in Mostar, after the Yugoslav Prime Minister Džemal Bijedić, it was renamed to its current name in 1992. It continued to operate during the war period. It is one of two public universities in Mostar (the other, the "Džemal Bijedić" University in Mostar, founded in 1993, took the previous name of the University of Mostar).
History
[edit]The University of Mostar was founded in 1977, although Mostar and Herzegovina have a tradition of developing higher education and school institutions since the late 19th century. The first university-level school dates back to 1895. It was the Franciscan Theological Studies at Brig, Široki Brijeg, initially a four-year course, and later, from 1933, a five-year course, with the last two years being studied at other universities. After World War II, this institution was closed.
The College of Pedagogy in Mostar was founded in 1950. It was the predecessor of the Faculty of Pedagogy, which in 2005 was divided into two faculties, namely the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Educational Sciences. In 1959, the College of Engineering was founded in Mostar. From the academic year 1970/1971, it became a department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Sarajevo. In 1977, these faculties separated from the University of Sarajevo, establishing the "Džemal Bijedić" University. Mostar became an independent university center.
Despite objective difficulties, the University did not stop working even during the war period from 1991 to 1995, when (in 1992) it was renamed to its current name "University of Mostar". Since the mid-1990s, new faculties and scientific institutes have been opening. During the most difficult war years, when the survival of the University was threatened, the function of the rector of the University of Mostar was held by Prof. Dr. Sc. Zdenko Kordić (rector from 1992 to 1999). His contribution to the creation, preservation and promotion of the University of Mostar at the European and world level will remain permanently recorded.
In 2002, the 100th anniversary of the Franciscan Seminary (the roots of higher education in these areas) was celebrated, and in 2007, the 30th anniversary of the University of Mostar.
In mid-2003, the University of Mostar, as the first university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, applied to participate in the institutional evaluation program of the European University Association (EUA). The successful completion of the institutional evaluation in September 2004 undoubtedly represents a significant reference and a step forward for the University of Mostar on the path to full inclusion in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Since the academic year 2005/2006, the way of studying at the University of Mostar has been completely changed and adapted in accordance with the recommendations of the Bologna Declaration.
In the academic year 2008/2009, the first generation of students was enrolled in the second cycle, i.e. graduate studies at the faculties of the University where the first cycle (undergraduate study) lasts three years. The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Mostar launched the third cycle - doctoral studies in the academic year 2006/2007, and in the academic year 2008/2009 the third cycle was also launched by the Faculty of Economics of the University of Mostar, together with the Faculty of Economics of the University of Split.
The University of Mostar launched the third cycle in the academic year 2011/2012. welcomed the year with about 16,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies at a total of 10 faculties and one academy, about 1,000 professors and associates, and with reconstructed buildings of the Faculty of Agronomy and Food Technology, Law, Economics and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computing, newly built buildings of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Educational Sciences, Medicine and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Health Studies, which was financed by the Government of Croatia.
The most recent addition to the university was the Theological and Catechetic Institute, which until July 5, 2024 was under the auspices of the University of Sarajevo.
Importance
[edit]The constant development and growth of the University is ensured through numerous activities, such as: continuous modernization of curricula, launching scientific research, establishing and developing a network of inter-university cooperation, both within BiH and in the wider region and Europe, as well as cooperation with the economy. Today, the University is a full member of all significant European and regional university associations and academic networks, with very successful and intensive international cooperation.
The mission of the University of Mostar is based on two basic characteristics of higher education institutions: education and scientific research. Through its work to date, the University of Mostar has proven and confirmed itself as an institution oriented towards both students and scientific research, with the fundamental task of education, but also the social and cultural development of individuals and their preparation for responsible and quality inclusion in the economic, cultural and scientific life of society as a whole.
This is the only university in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Croatian official language that preserves and nurtures the Croatian cultural identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond, but also a university open to all students, teachers and associates regardless of their ideological, political, cultural and religious affiliations.
The University of Mostar has defined a mission that makes it unique and recognized in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in the wider region – to create and shape a modern, tolerant, European-oriented university, while preserving and developing the Croatian cultural identity. The University of Mostar has signed cooperation agreements with universities in Pécs, Granada, Brandenburg, Rome, Ljubljana, Maribor, Podgorica, Koper, Zagreb, Osijek, Dubrovnik, Split, Rijeka, Varaždin and Koprivnica,[4] Zadar, Pula, Mostar (Džemal Bijedić), Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica, Bihać, East Sarajevo.
