An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sunset and Vine. Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Gb321! Your additions to Hollywood Sikh Temple have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's eligibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 15:17, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
- The document in question was made by the City of Los Angeles. In California, all government documents are presumed in the public domain unless specifically stated otherwise. See:
- I cannot find any Los Angeles specific rulings that say otherwise, but I understand if you want the text removed just to be extra safe.
- Gb321 (talk) 21:27, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
- I don't see evidence that local governments are prohibited from exerting copyright, only the state. Without that, I would treat this document as though it is. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 21:35, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
- I re-added text in my own words so that while I don't think the original text was copyrighted, now we don't have to worry about it either way. Just wanted to let you know so you can review it. Gb321 (talk) 17:53, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi there. I have reverted your proposed deletions of these two articles. You are however still free to nominate them on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion (you cannot use {{proposed deletion}} on these pages again since I have objected). But because of the existence to the navigation boxes Template:Streets in Los Angeles and Template:Streets in the San Gabriel Valley, and the categories Category:Streets in Los Angeles and Category:Streets in the San Gabriel Valley, I would then argue on any AFD discussion that these list pages should be cleaned up and expanded, rather than deleted outright. I would cite many of the guidelines on Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates. Particularly, the line on the second paragraph which says, Many users prefer to browse Wikipedia through its lists, while others prefer to navigate by category; and lists are more obvious to beginners, who may not discover the category system right away.
I would also cite WP:NOTDUPE, and that we would be deleting lists that essentially duplicates those existing navboxes and categories. Even though theses lists just have links now, they do not have the disadvantages of categories and the disadvantages of navboxes, especially those disadvantages that are very noticeable on mobile versions of Wikipedia (such as the fact that navboxes are currently disabled on the mobile versions, and browsing a list of links on a single list page may be far easier for users on the mobile version than trying to load categories). And of course, lists have advantages as well. So again, these lists pages should be cleaned up and expanded, not deleted outright, because of the advantages and disadvantages between categories, lists, and navigation boxes. Thanks.
