Notability problem

As it stands, it looks like an advertisement. I have welcomed the user, pointed out the problems and the relevant Wiki policies. I strongly suspect an attempt to get free advertising but we must AGF and give the author a chance to remedy the problems. Naughty boys and decorative girls ...

When Australia elected a socialist govt in the 1970s, we got rid of knighthoods, but in name only. The knighthood was replaced by Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). To date, only one person has been naughty enough to need to "resign from the Order" - Richard Pratt (Australian businessman).

For 50 years (until he died), and while he was making his squillions, and giving lots of it away, he was living (in luxury) in Melbourne and was married to, and having children with Jeanne Pratt. Jeanne was also giving away millions, and was awarded an AC in her own right. (Isn't that sweet? Matching medals on the mantlepiece!)

However, when Dick visited Sydney, he also had a "bit on the side", (also referred to as "his long-term mistress"), and had a daughter with her, too.

This gossip column from 2005 is delightfully titled "Space invaders", and made me laugh out loud.
Translations:

• The smh is Sydney's highly respectable daily broadsheet - NOT owned by Murdoch, much to Murdoch's disgust (and at one time, envy.)
• Ita Buttrose, best known for publishing Australia's first nude male centrefold, is an Australian icon with a lisp who is now VERY respectable.
• Gosford is one of Sydney's "low rent" areas - no, I'm not talking about housing prices.
• The Entrance, not far from Gosford, "has been a very popular holiday destination for many people"

Please don't take my comments on User talk:Pdfpdf the wrong way. I've edited with him as well (prhaps moreso) and he has my respect as I also suspect he has yours. It is my belief that he was feeling WP burnout and, having failed to retire from the project, ended up making mistakes (see here, for example) which resulted in him being pushed out. It was in response to this and, particularly, the ongoing criticism of his conduct after he'd gone, that I added my comments. (Is that a case of flogging a dead horse or kicking a man when he's down?) If you want to open an ANI or RFC over his blocking, though, please feel free and, if you let me know, I'll be happy to add my opinion of Pdfpdf. However please also keep in mind that (a) Pdfpdf is gone and he's already said he's glad of it, and (b) as in his editing, he's more than capable of standing up for himself. Please Stop the Edit War on To-Shin Do

First, I appreciate the various points you've made regarding dead links, etc. However, you just deleted several fixes on the To-Shin Do page, after I spent hours correcting things. I am a member of the Martial Arts Portal, and I've worked on several articles spanning Korean and Japanese arts. But I've never had issues like the kind I'm experiencing with your redactions.

Furthermore, I am not clear on what your objections are.

• A) The Black Belt feature article talks about the founding of To-Shin Do. Yet you continue to say the article is only about Hayes.
• B) Primary Sources are permitted in Contemporary Articles, especially when the source is being used to show a public position by the article's topic.
• C) The Crudelli citation is about To-Shin Do and explicitly differentiates it from Bujinkan. I even typed the whole paragraph, which you erased.

Mixed martial arts categorization

I'm having trouble understanding why you reverted edits in which I added Category:Mixed martial arts to a variety of mixed martial arts pages:

• Category:Mixed martial artists
• Category:Mixed martial arts films
• Category:Mixed martial arts video games
• Category:Mixed martial arts training facilities
• Category:Mixed martial arts people
• Category:Mixed martial arts events
• Category:Mixed martial arts organizations

These are all very clearly related to the overall theme of mixed martial arts, and my inclusion of these pages in this category does not diminish at all from other categories that these pages belong to. A single page can have multiple categorizations, and I have taken care to make sure that I wasn't added them to categories that they were already nested in. Of course, mixed martial arts films are not an instance/example of mixed martial arts, but no one would misunderstand this categorization to mean that. These are conceptually related pages that all fall under the same "umbrella." Please read Wikipedia:Categorization#Category organization for an explanation of the difference between "topic" and "set" categories. Saying that the boxing category is handled differently doesn't mean that is the correct way to approach this. That's not a sufficient rationale for reverting edits across a variety of related pages. In 2010 the Martial Arts Project reviewed (and improved and deleted) many articles: see Wikipedia:MAAR. We made much use of the Catscan tool [5] for searching the category tree under Martial Arts. As part of the review, we made some order in the categorization. Categories are useful when they separate things. At that time, we separated all the categories of people from all the categories of martial arts. In the category of people, we added a 'see also' to point to the martial art. In the category of martial art, we added a 'see also' to point to the people category. We also separated fiction from non-fiction and media from Martial arts. Donn Draeger on "Schools of Ninjutsu"

Donn Draeger's expertise on Ninja's and such things is not stablished in the article in order to use him as a source to invalidate these schools' claims or to determine who was "the last of the living ninja". How would he know? It is his POV but it is not something that can be proven (that such and such was the last of the living ninja, without going into a lot of detail on research and stuf...). I guess http://www.koryu.com/index.html is more of the kind of site or reference that _can_ be used as NPOV: true research institutes that deal with the historical ninja thing and deny the probability of a conexion between modern schools and ancient ones. Martial arts categories

Hi Jmcw37. I'm reverting a lot of your changes to categories related to the martial arts. There are a number of issues. In some cases, they're just badly incorrect (for instance this or this makes no sense). In other cases, you've substituted for example Category:Judo by a {{catrel}} template [6]. This is not the right choice since the subcategory will stop showing up in Category:Judo. Let me know if you need help with this. Best, Pichpich (talk) 04:18, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Another problem seems to be your reluctance to consider topic categories as opposed to set categories (for instance your decision to remove Category:Karateka from Category:Karate). But topic categories are used routinely all over Wikipedia: this distinction is discussed in detail at Wikipedia:Categorization#Category organization. Changes to Peter Urban (karate)

I am not sure why you keep chopping lines of out a paragraph in the article Peter Urban (karate) but the paragraph makes very little sense when reduced in this fashion.

First off, whether you agree with the statement about Yubitsume being a samurai custom or not, that is what Peter Urban believed at the time. Now I didn't make up the story; it came from several sites including one run by Urban's daughter.

I was skeptical of the whole story until I mentioned it to my Sensei (who met Peter Urban in 2000) and apparently a finger tip was missing although not all the way up to the joint.

Perhaps we can come to a compromise. I will restore the missing lines but will leave out the word "samurai"

p.s. Kudos to all the other work you have done fixing up the Karate articles. Wikipedia is one sure fire way to get the history of Karate away from "oral tradition" (which is probably why there is so much variation in the first place) Neilrieck (talk) 01:33, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I am glad you mentioned "oral tradition". Wikipedia demands academic quality references. The field of martial arts has few academic quality sources. I value the contemporary authors (like Patrick McCarthy) who footnote their material to say which senior student has passed on a story. The line of quality that I try to hold in Wikipedia is that a story should be traceable (if it cannot be academical verified). Theoretical, in the future, someone could prove or disprove a traceable story.

Therefore, for me, a club website is useless. A website edited by Urban's daughter would be a valid reference: she should be mentioned in the Wikipedia article/footnote as the source.

Tsutomu Yukawa

I'd like to ask your opinion about Tsutomu Yukawa. I'm questioning his notability since I'm not seeing any way he passes WP:MANOTE and none of the sources seem, IMO, to show "significant" coverage. Even his short entry at http://www.aikidojournal.com/encyclopedia?entryID=790 focuses on his relationship with Morihei Ueshiba (WP:NOTINHERITED). That his name comes up several times in Aikido Journal and his mention in Kisshomaru Ueshiba's Aikido book gives me the feeling that he is not a light weight - he was a senior student of O-sensei. It is a close call: there appear to be many good-quality reliable sources that mention him but I have not seen an article of which he is the subject (needed for WP:BASIC). My opinion: Wikipedia would be better for keeping the article. jmcw (talk) 22:36, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

The author and I disagree on whether these sources are "significant". However, at least for now I'm going to leave the notability tag and not put it up for AfD. As you've said before "it's not fluff." My new personal goal is to only put articles up for deletion that I think are "fluff" (a very technical term) or lack independent sources. I was just reading through WP:GNG and was surprised by the Wikipedia definition of "Significant coverage":

"Significant coverage" means that sources address the subject directly in detail, so no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention but it need not be the main topic of the source material.

Notability questions

I came across some articles on Japanese martial artists and I was wondering if you could shine any light on their notability. The artists are Motokatsu Inoue, Seiko Fujita, Manzo Iwata, Fujitani Masatoshi, and Higa Yuchoku. I'm afraid I don't have a good feel for the notability of traditional Japanese martial artists.

I think that its notability is due exclusively to the movie Batman Begins. The information of the article is preserved in the context of the movie series. RyuTe Wiki Page

Could you please provide an idea what you'd like to see in terms of additional citations and notability for the RyuTe wiki page? I am fairly new to Wikipedia, and while I've read the general articles on both, I'm not sure what the specific concerns are in this case.

For example, it appears to me as if the notability issue has been addressed already. There are six different print references (5 books and 1 magazine article) to Seiyu Oyata listed on that page, which would seem to be sufficient to establish notability. In terms of additional citations, more are always better, but are there particular sections of the page which you're concerned with? If so, it might be easier to address if you were to provide notes either by section or by particular (missing) reference. As it stands now, I only see one instance of a particular citation being labeled as insufficient.

Writing the kata as Miuki-dome is a common mistake. Pascal knows this. His book had quite a few errors. thank you for pointing out that mine was a good-faith effort. I too believe that it was, as I fully intended it to take the partisan edge off of the tenor of the article by establishing, through tacit implication, a neutral place of taking-no-preference as to whether one world-view is valid or the other or both or neither. I would aver that you may do well to reconsider your undoing of revision, per this reason: the article itself has a bias warning, and I submit to you that it should, for it is written from a perspective that presupposes that the phenomenon described is a priori evidence of a delusional state, and that must ultimately conclude as negative certain assertions about what some call "the spiritual nature" of our human experience - and this is the nature of the rift underlying the bias. let's be frank: mystics vs. logicians. my claim here is that, until a talented, skilled and fully neutral editor takes said article over, might it not be true that setting the word within its proper paradigm and acknowledging the clear bias of the technospeak that was to come might be worth the sacrifice of a small amount of simplicity?

Thank you for your understanding. If you note my recent edits in the article and on the talk page, I see no reliable refences that justify a mention of religion (or any other philosophical system). I think the statement 'the human tendency to seek patterns in random information' is already too srong: I would prefer 'the human tendency to seek patterns in information'. I think pareidolia, conspiracy theories and gambling are better presentations of apophenia rather than divination and synchronicity. Seikichi Toguchi edit

This is my first foray into Wikipedia so I apologize if not adhering to protocols. I offer the following background and would certainly arrange for copies of any certificates and/or personal affadavits and statement from Riijikai as proof of these events if required.

Vic Hargitt is my sensei, and has been since 1986, and has been Chief Instructor in Canada since 2000. As offered in the edit, Vic Hargitt Sensei was examined by Toguchi Kaicho for rank of Shihan on June 13, 1997. Approx. 8 weeks after this examination and granting of Shihan, Kaicho fell ill and subsequently remained in hospital until his death on August 31, 1998.

Madame Haruko Toguchi became head of the organization, along with a committee of black belts, following Master Toguchi's passing. Vic Hargitt Sensei was given certification for the rank of Rokudan on July 19, 2004. Shortly thereafter (August 31, 2004) Madame Toguchi Kaicho took retirement as head of Shorei-Kai but remained as an advisor for some time after.

During the October 2004 meeting of the Shorei-Kai, Norihiro Yamamoto was chosen as the Kaicho to head this new organization. Also at this meeting, Masaru Nose Shihan was appointed President and remains as Kaicho to the present time.

On several occasions, Madame Toguchi and Nose Kaicho (along with 2 other senior black belts of the organization) have expressed to Vic Hargitt Sensei that he was the last person examined for the rank of Shihan by Toguchi Kaicho and, as well, the last person granted certification by Madame Toguchi Kaicho.
