Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer, it is a container category with only two subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:34, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

General discussion
[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, these are all people of ethnic Han Chinese descent sorted by language of their ancestors. The latter has become rather irrelevant as these people are now nationals of another country.
I have created subsections per nationality. If someone thinks a certain nationality is a special case or an exception, comments can be left in that specific section.
This is follow-up on this earlier discussion and this earlier discussion, @Place Clichy, RevelationDirect, Oculi, Peterkingiron, and Johnpacklambert: pinging contributors to earlier discussions. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:19, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge all We should not be splitting Han ancestry by language.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:21, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Umperge All There are certainly ethno-linguistic groups but, in general, language doesn't survive in descent categories when ancestors typically start speaking the common local languages. - RevelationDirect (talk) 21:06, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge. From a sample I looked at, these categories seem to have been filled mostly according to the region of origin of these people or there ancestors, rather than by RS associating them personally with a distinct ethnicity. As these regions are often the regions of China from which has originated the largest share of Chinese diaspora in the Asia-Pacific region, these people are probably most often described as just Chinese or of Chinese ancestry where they live. These made-up differences therefore make no sense in the diaspora, even if they do within China. There could be local exceptions, e.g. if there is somewhere in diaspora a Hakka subculture that is clearly distinct from the rest of the local Chinese diaspora and if people put in the category are commonly and consistently defined by RS as Hakka rather than Chinese, but I didn't see any among the list. Place Clichy (talk) 14:15, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose most -- Hao is Chinese people from Vietnam. Many of the Cantonese will have come via Hong Kong. Other overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia (e.g. Singapore) were specifically from Hokkien by descent; other Teochew. Hakka are similarly distinct. Certainly descent from overseas Chinese is quite different from descent from emigrants direct from PRC. I do not know where the Chinese who built American Railroads and then settled in California were recruited, but I presume they represent a somewhat different group from more recent arrivals in California. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:14, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Those are interesting historic facts, but it is not clear why we would categorize biographies by these historic facts. As said, it is no longer relevant for individual people living in a different country. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:57, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment' Maybe you're wrong. Contemporary Chinese people still honour descent, family ancestors and etnic affiliation groups. Read for example the novel The Chinese by Henning Mankell or see the movie made of it. Chinese are not just individuals with libertarian philosophy. --Just N. (talk) 16:27, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The Babel extension uses "User pt-BR" when using the {{#babel:pt-br}} syntax, so I suggest using that. ~~~~

The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:30, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The Babel extension uses "User en-CA" and "User en-GB", so it makes sense to use that. ~~~~

  • Merge although would be easier for gb to merge the other way, since GB has only 6 transclusions, whereas gb has 3,085 transclusions. So unless a bot is going to fix all 3,085 transclusions, then should keep the template actually being used. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:42, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joseph2302 As I said, the Babel extension will always add the en-GB category when using {{#babel:en-gb}}, and since that is hard-coded unlike the entries in the en-gb category, I suggest merging into the first one. Also, even though a bot is often used/required for CfD tasks and thus changing 3K pages would hardly be a problem, I doubt that a lot of pages even add the category directly rather than through a template. ~~~~

As long as a bot goes and fixes the 3k of transclusions, I don't mind if it's merged as proposed then. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:34, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: There is really no scheme of a single films having their own category; such categories are usually part of a film series or a broader franchise. This category should be renamed and repurposed under the scheme for Category:Songs written for films (and removing the film and soundtrack from the category). I'm not against deleting the category either. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 16:59, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
