- I spotted it going into the UK meetup list, and I've added it to the meetup geonotice queue. Meetup geonotices for the UK don't go up earlier than four weeks in advance; less than that if there are more than four upcoming meetups. Of the regular meetups that are not yet queued, I'm expecting to queue London 87 (3-4 weeks in advance of 9 Nov), Oxford 22 (3-4 weeks in advance of 16 Nov) and Manchester 26 (3-4 weeks in advance of 22 Nov). On that basis, Sheffield should go up around the beginning of November. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:14, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

- Done - I've gone for the second (as this is a watchlist notice...) and used the larger coordinates for the current LA editathon notice, set to activate on 5 September. I can restrict it to the smaller area if you'd like. Andrew Gray (talk) 20:11, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- Comment: I don't know whether this is a problem with the coordinates or some peculiarity of my IP address, but I am seeing this notice, and I live hundreds of miles away in the San Francisco Bay Area. Andrew Gray could you double-check coordinates? Good luck with the event Chris troutman! -Pete (talk) 02:07, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Peteforsyth: The coordinates cover a rectangle defined by two corners (see MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js), in this case those corners are 33°00′N 117°15′W / 33°N 117.25°W and 35°00′N 119°15′W / 35°N 119.25°W - 2° high by 2° wide, centred on 34°00′N 118°15′W / 34°N 118.25°W - very close to the centre of LA. This rectangle excludes such cities as Bakersfield and San Diego; it certainly doesn't extend all the way to SF. You can check what areas that it does cover at this map: uncheck all the boxes on the left except for the LAneetup20 one, then drag about and zoom in to see what area is covered by the green rectangle. But Geolocation by IP address is an inexact science: it's only as good as the data that is currently held, and if an IP address is a dynamic IP, it might be reassigned on a frequent basis to computers that are far apart physically. Many British IP addresses (like mine) geolocate to London, perhaps because the ISP's headquarters is there. It might be that your ISP's headquarters is in LA. This may also mean that somebody who truly is in LA might not be seeing the notice if their ISP is headquartered in, for instance, Seattle. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:27, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- As RR says, this is a pretty hit-and-miss approach - in theory it should only be picking up people around LA, but it's only as good as the data the ISPs give us. (You can see where yours thinks it is here.) Andrew Gray (talk) 14:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you both for the thorough responses. Looks like you've got it covered! Thanks for that link, Andrew...today, it seems to have a pretty good read on where I am, but I guess yesterday it didn't. -Pete (talk) 16:13, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- So, Andrew Gray, it's still showing up for me, even though my location is accurate:
Geo = {"city":"Emeryville","country":"US","lat":"37.834202","lon":"-122.289703","IP":"107.138.146.41"}
- Something seems to be amiss. I'm not worried about it for myself, but it seems worth digging into, like there might be a bug somewhere along the way...only, I have no idea where to start! -Pete (talk) 17:15, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- Very weird. Unfortunately, I've no idea either - I just list the entries! No real idea how the code itself works. One possibility might be that you went to LA recently and it's somehow cached on your browser, but that's pushing it... Andrew Gray (talk) 17:42, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

If/when we can confirm that we're able to hire non-US folks, I'll request to disable this and put up a general watchlist notice instead. @Andrew Gray:. --Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:20, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- Just up - hopefully, it's the first time I've used the new system. Is there an interwiki for WEF? (Not essential, but it tidies things up a bit). Andrew Gray (talk) 00:03, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

- Odd - it's definitely being picked up by the toolserver feed, which generally means it's working. Have you tried purging your cache on the watchlist page? Andrew Gray (talk) 20:58, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Andrew Gray: yes, I've tried purging the cache and also cleared out my custom .js just in case that was causing the problem. Still not showing.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:23, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'm at a loss, I'm afraid - hmm. The only thing that might possibly be causing problems that I can see is the html links, but they look fine - if you want to knock up an onwiki soft redirect page I could switch to that and see if it works. Andrew Gray (talk) 21:27, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Andrew Gray: I think I've discovered the problem; I have an IPv6 address, and that isn't being picked up by our geoip system. When I set my browser to force IPv4, it showed up.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:59, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Aha! Yes, that would do it - I remember someone mentioning we can't geolocate any IPv6. At least it's now a known problem - not sure there's any practical workaround, though, short of advertising it to everyone... Andrew Gray (talk) 22:12, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

- Done. I've winged the coordinates a bit - you've got almost all of Vermont but only the southern half of Maine, as otherwise you'd catch Montreal and Quebec. It does include Bangor and Portland, though. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:57, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- Andrew, can you please modify the message to add a couple important links (or whatever the current message is, add the links please):
- You are invited to three upcoming edit-a-thons in memory of Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz: Boston: May 21, 4-9pm; Providence: May 22, 1:30-6:00pm; and Boston: June 25, 6-9pm. We hope you can join us!
- Happy to do this if you really want, but I've generally tried to avoid having multiple links in geonotices - as we can't easily bold/emphasise links, it ensures people follow the correct link & get to the event page! Might it be best to give the context and explanatory links on the event page itself? Andrew Gray (talk) 16:45, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sure Andrew, but I'm 200 miles away and am unable to attend due to that, as such, I was just wondering who this doctor was and why we were holding a memorial edit-a-thon in her name. Then, I searched for "Dr. Adrianne Wadewitz" and it was a redlink, so I was even more confused (I've since created a redirect to resolve that issue). I'm sure there are others too far away that might just be interested to see who she was. As far as emphasizing the link to the edit-a-thon page...

- Seems to do a fairly good job at it. :) — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 17:07, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- The problem with geonotices is that they're pretty finicky with regards to accepted characters - I'm not entirely confident that I'd get all the js escaping right to have the bolding work without screwing it up! If you think it's essential I'll add the AW link, but editathon seems a bit superfluous to me (we've not done it for any other notices). Andrew Gray (talk) 18:45, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- That works Andrew, although you could include the "Dr." in the link. It takes you to the same place and is appropriate in my opinion. edit-a-thon, well, if they are new here and don't know what that means, they can find it pretty easy by a search. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 18:53, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

- Done! Andrew Gray (talk) 23:12, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
- Just noticed this. Pigsonthewing, the rectangle bounded by 52°43′13″N 2°23′47″W / 52.7203°N 2.3964°W 52°11′04″N 1°08′58″W / 52.1845°N 1.1494°W whilst enclosing the whole of West Midlands county, is a rather small area considering the poor accuracy of geolocation within the UK. My own IP address, as has been noted elsewhere, has a geolocation which is out by 50 miles. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:48, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. @Andrew Gray: Worth expanding it then, do you think? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:18, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- Happy to if someone gives me a suitably-sized area. My geography in that part of the country is pretty hazy :-) Andrew Gray (talk) 19:06, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know just what the degree of inaccuracy is. But if there are any people in the West Midlands area who are like me (and my mother) in having a broadband supplier whose dynamic IP addresses geolocate to Westminster, I suspect that a south-eastern corner at 51°29′N 0°07′W / 51.49°N 0.12°W should catch those people.
- Incidentally, if you want to check where your own IP address geolocates to, go to WP:URIP2 and click the "See here" link. The data is in JSON format, with several key:value pairs; the interesting ones are "country", "lat", and "lon", which for me show "country":"GB","lat":"51.500000","lon":"-0.130000". --Redrose64 (talk) 21:09, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

- I really don't think that the coords need to be precise to fourteen places of decimals. According to WP:OPCOORD that works out at an accuracy of approximately one nanometre - comparable to the size of an atom. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:30, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

- Is this a rescheduling of the one which you pulled a few weeks ago? If so, we can reuse that, with the link and dates changed. The ID should be changed to WalesTTTFeb14 too, in case people have already dismissed the first one. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:05, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
